From the pages of The Self-Sufficient Business · Liberty Designs is a fictional company
The fictional leadership team

The company changes when its people can decide.

James built Liberty Designs. Luke understands the jobs. Nicole sees the numbers. They must learn to connect those strengths—without creating a new bottleneck.

JFounder / Direction

James

The builder who became the bottleneck.

James worked hard to earn the company’s success. He answered the tough calls, approved the unexpected expenses and protected quality. But good intentions became a habit that kept everyone waiting for him.

What he must learn
To set guardrails, share authority and judge success by what the company can do when he is absent.
LOperations / Execution

Luke

The capable operator waiting for permission.

Luke knows the projects, the trades and the customers. On the Anderson job he has the information to act, but past practice has taught him to seek the founder’s approval.

What he must learn
To make sound decisions inside agreed boundaries, document changes and own the outcomes.
NFinance / Visibility

Nicole

The numbers behind the decisions.

Nicole makes costs, cash timing and project implications visible. Her role is not to stop action—it is to provide the facts that allow responsible decisions to happen closer to the work.

What she must strengthen
To turn financial information into shared understanding, not a report that only leadership sees.
The moment that matters

One call. A different answer.

Before boarding a flight, James takes a call about the Anderson project.

He could solve the problem himself. Instead, he begins teaching a different kind of leadership: one built on trust supported by context, limits and documentation.

From the book
“You’ll make the right decision based on our history. I trust your judgment.”
